Sometimes, things stand out of time. The tree out front this mid winter day, still as still, then this morning the tiniest of birds flies onto its branches, flutters through the tree and for a few moments it comes alive.
Just beyond, on the other side of the road the church, now apartments, motionless until a seagull lands on the front apex stone chiselled cross, then alive it comes. That seagull, standing proud and tall for a while, then gone; flying through grey midwinter skies, wings outstretched gliding air currents higher up and that church, standing out of time again.
It was built in 1898. Originally a parish hall, consecrated in 1931 but never became a permanent church. Used as a studio by the BBC for a while with programmes broadcast from it then that changed and scenery was made in it. In 1986, the church was turned into two houses. I think it’s apartments now.
Things change.
And sometimes, they stand still in time.
And midwinter, between Christmas and the light properly returning, is one of those times. That’s why this morning, and yesterday, time feels like it’s standing still. Shoots in the ground thinking about growing, creatures hibernating. Yesterday a typical British wet soggy day, under feet and in the air. The kind of day that drove the Romans back to Rome. The sort of day when you get wet even if it doesn’t rain because the air is wet; and grass squelches.
The pavements were pretty much empty on Main Street, and only a few shops open, people hunkering down in the post Christmas lull. Walking through the park, everything hibernating. Something nice about that. People hiding out and the world; can wait. By 4 it’s getting dark, then all the lights come on in people’s windows. The above photo isn’t my town, but when people’s lights come on along the road and in the distance, it has the same feel.

More roasted vegetables with homemade kefir cheese balls
I took the kefir cheese I’ve been making and rolled into balls then in chopped cilantro and served this with warm roasted vegetables. I roasted them in garlic butter, smelt delish, and tasted the same. This is a nice vata small dish.
Night has arrived now, dark as dark, music plays, washing up waiting to be done, will I wont I, will I won’t I, will I won’t I…
I hope you are having a cosy warmly lit mid winter, this post Christmas, one that allows you plenty of rest.

Wishing you the warmest,

Your words are transporting me to Christmases of my youth Lucy 😀 Here, the sun is shining, the air is fresh, and when I'm not having long lazy sleeps, I just want to be outdoors. Time to tend the overgrown garden, read books in a hammock and drive to the beach for long walks and a quick dip 💙
Wishing you a cosy, restful midwinter, Lucy. All the hearts to you. ❤️
