Earlier this week, one evening, the deep blue sky ushered in the evening to a street carpeted with wet ground. Damp air snuggled brickwork and roofs. People, were snug behind curtained windows where chinks of light shone out and I, was wandering the streets looking for foxes and badgers and other night creatures that appear, when humans decide it’s time for sleep.
The moon, not quite full, lit my way along darkened streets with few lampposts, and stars were hiding out of view. It was so silent and the wet air made my coat damp. The next day the forecast was for heavy rain. I thought about how I would be watching the raindrops through be-speckled glasses as I made for the bus in the early hours when skies would still be dark. And how I would watch the water gushing along roads and out of guttering. But on this dark cloud filled evening the rain had not yet arrived, it was just damp, and dark, and silent.
I meandered my way home, turning up this street then that, making my way onto the familiar main road with lights and music and cars and people out for the night. Then past the red post box dark in the night, and there I spotted my first and only creature of the night, a fox.
Once home the cosy lights streamed out from my windows, and music kept me company as I finished the evening with ordinary things to paint this life into the next day.
Then I made my way to bed, opened the window to see if I could hear an owl and smell the earth. The damp soil smells were in the air, but no owls; all was quiet. And so, I decided I would dream of them instead. Along with Mediterranean blue seas, earthy tracks, tapas, olive groves socialising and, playing the gammon. Soon, it will be the spring I thought and that means, summer is not far away.
Today, Sunday, two little birds on the telephone wire, third one in the tree; three little birds. And the sun, peeking through. I’m sending this out early because I’m out today, helping to plant a wildlife hedge around a field, where I will be looking after an allotment, very soon.

Recipe
Lime & ginger hummus with warm beetroot
This was a nice small plate. I sliced and baked the beetroot in parchment paper with olive oil. The hummus was made from a can of chickpeas, 2 tablespoons of the liquid, 1/4 cup tahini, 1 clove of garlic, 1 tablespoon of freshly grated ginger root (fine grate), 1/4 of a cup of lime juice and some tamari. I hope you enjoy.
Full moon
The full moon shone down on trees and bird nests, roofs, bright city lights and dark earthy parks. Some people looked up at that moon, through their windows from inside snug warmly lit homes. Others sat out under the stars and around fires playing music until, in the early, early hours they rested their warm hearts and happy heads on the earth. And fell asleep looking at that shining moon, which watched over them all night long.
Wishing you the warmest,

Full moon blessings, Lucy! As always, I found myself in a calmer, more grounded place after reading your words today. Thank you!
Love your writing. It reminds me of childhood when there were gravel alleys and not so much pavement and I spent every afternoon outside exploring or playing sports!!
