Ayurveda believes that a daily routine that begins with getting up before the sun, strengthens your immunity, purifies your body of its wastes, and balances your biology and tissues. With the help of simple healthy routines, you can clear the body and mind, and start the day feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

These daily routines are collectively referred to as your ‘dinacharya’, and they synchronise your biology with the solar cycle – in the West we talk about synchronising our circadian rhythms with the 24 hour solar cycle for health of mind and body.

These healthy routines begin with waking up before the sun, or, if this feels too tricky where the sun is rising for you right now, then before 6am for vata types, before 5:30am for pitta types and before 4:30 for kapha types – dependant upon your health context.

Ayurveda also talks about a specific time for getting up if you like to connect to the clear, pure, spiritual energies that exist prior to the world on your area of the planet, getting going. This is called Brahma Mahurta, and is one and a half hours before sunrise.

For Ayurveda, brahma muhurta is viewed as the time of pure consciousness and called ‘nectar time’ by some. Getting up at this time helps to keep your bio energies, tissues and wastes in balance. The view is that if you get up during brahma mahurta you will live longer and are less likely to get ill. Here’s a great paper that explains the benefits of ‘nectar time’ for your mind and body.
