Slow Sunday, seasonal changes & a recipe
Meatballs with chard, courgette and buttery potatoes
I found myself in an area of beach wood yesterday. Off the track I went and found a tree stump to sit on. It was covered in moss and mud and the ground was covered in crunchy copper leaves, fading into the soil. I could smell earthy things and the sun, rippled between leaf top trees, onto the ground. When I stared without focusing, it was like being in an impressionist painting that had come alive. Lovely, it was.
There was ivy all over the ground too, rich emerald green, and the silence, was; as silent as silent. One wood pigeon I heard, and that was all. But, there were lots of flying creatures, mostly flies; one butterfly, flying into tree branches. I sat there thinking about, things. Then I wandered further in getting as lost as I could manage, until some mountain bikers found me and set me on my way. It was so still. So, beautiful.
When I came out I headed to Clifton suspension bridge, the crowds were there, stunning views and, across the other side and down a bit, a lovely grassy bank where people sat or rolled around together under the sun. One person on their own reading, and the view, stunning, looking out over the Avon gorge. It was too beautiful to get my phone out to photograph, everyone enjoying the last of the summer sun. Sun with actual heat in it. You never know over here in the U.K. whether September will bring warmth and sun, or cold winds and grey skies. We’re having a bit of both this year.
I walked on down to the harbour, full of bustle on this early Saturday evening, then meandered around, drank some tea and wended my way home on a bus full of Saturday shoppers.
Today, has been a very lazy day, as I ponder an adventure, well a new opportunity of work doing absolute what I will love. Helping people who for a time have felt less than at their best, perhaps even forgotten how amazing they are. And, how amazing life can be. In case anyone reading this would like to know more, especially if you work in an organisation, the business venture I will be part of is called Whole People.

Recipe
Meatballs with chard, courgette and buttery potatoes
This is a good lunch for vata types as we shift into the autumn. Really simple again. I made the meatballs with minced beef, an egg, rusk crumbs, turmeric, salt, black pepper and garlic. Browned in hot ghee then turned down to the lowest setting and cooked for about 30 or 40 minutes. Sautéd the ruby chard in butter with courgette and pumpkin seeds, added some tamari. Steamed sliced potatoes and tossed with butter, salt and parsley. Served it all with a bit of sauerkraut. My vata/pitta body felt well nourished after eating.
Well it’s a short Slow Sunday letter today because I’m having a very, very, lazy day. Soon to turn into a lazy evening of just, being. And wondering if the stars will be shining out over the woodland tonight.
What, a beautiful universe we live in. I’d love to know your favourite things in this universe, this world, the part of the planet where you find yourself. Perhaps you’ll tell me in the comments.
Wishing you the warmest,
Lucy x
Love the joy dots with anything outside and also thinking about that recipe is soothing my overextended vata. I don’t feel grounded without some meat/fish, potatoes and butter in my diet. Not quite yogic but soothes my Celtic dna. Thanks for the post, quite timely for me today.
A lovely letter, Lucy! I had a very peaceful Sunday with a Buddhist nun, Ayya Anopama, who led us in retreat at my sangha friend’s home. I was very tired, so when she suggested we hold the day in silence, my soul said “yes please!” It was exactly what I needed. To practice & to lie in the sun & just be present – held in loving company but without needing to say or “be” anything. I am trying to carry some of that energy into this new week. 🙏🏼
